Figuring Out Your Creative Vision

Before we can do anything, we must first decide what your creative vision is. Your visual concept doesn't have to be crystal clear. Or even pulled together. Naturally, brownie points to anyone that can give me a collection of squiggles! But I don't expect all the answers if you're commissioning me. I am here to guide and define this creative process as much as you, or more. (Probs more).

What I do expect, though, is preferences and story lore. Specifically, I need the following answers explained for me.

For your benefit, I've put these questions as an interactive form.

So, if you're struggling to articulate your book cover vision (or film poster or whatever it may be you need for your story!), here's a handy form to help you workshop your ideas. Answers are emailed to you too! (No mail list dw).

5 Questions To Understand Your Creative Vision

#1 What is Your Primary Genre?

Most stories carry a variety of genre-coded themes even if you're not writing specifically as Speculative Fiction. Each of these genres will have a different demographic they attract. And, those with funds, will exploit this. Different posters, different trailers, even an entire different 'voice'. All to ensure the right people are getting the "right genre hook'.

Most of us don't have that luxury and must ensure we choose the most prominent genre for our single-campaign marketing. There's nothing worse than misrepresenting a story. So consider: What are the narrative themes, devices, tropes, beats, conflict, and settings in your story? What genre-coded aspects stand out as the general 'vibe'? Is it the same genre your work would be listed under? Or does another stand out?
